"As the night progressed, he knew that it is time to bid goodbye to the Esplanade, a memorable place that he would certainly revisit in the future, again and again."
Excerpts from A Night At The Esplanade.

Several months later. On a Tuesday evening, he returned to the Esplanade to catch the live performance of local jazz singer-songwriter Juliet Pang.

Although he did not know her personally, he was impressed by her soulful voice when he first heard her sing the theme song for local movie Eating Air more than a decade ago.

Tonight as he watched her perform her original composition, Once Again, his heart was filled with so much melancholy. Her capitivating voice conveyed the intense despondency in the sentimental melody, tugging on the delicate heartstrings of every single audience.

He silently prayed to God that she would find a man who will truly love her and never let her shed a tear again.

The heartwrenching lyrics also reminded him of a psychological phenomenon named repetition compulsion whereby one subconsciously gets into distressing relationships again and again despite active resistance from one's ego.

He began to think of the woman whom he loves so much despite the irreconcilable differences of age, status and soon, distance, between them. Yet he is willing to do everything for her without expecting anything in return.

As blogs are not restricted by the physical constraints of time and space, he decided to insert an entry from the future.

Several months later. He would like to say this to a friend who is leaving for LA, "I know I may be crazy but for you, I choose courage. I love you."

When the music ceased and celebrations ended, no one seemed to notice the lingering loneliness which can be, in itself, a beauty.

Walking down the empty streets of Chinatown on the third day of CNY when most shops were closed and makeshift stalls jettisoned, he remembered the Chinese idiom, 曲终人散.

Literally translated as "music ended, people left", he could not think of a better phrase to describe the deserted aftermath of CNY at Chinatown.

Contrary to the exhilarating mood of the prior weeks, the tranquil atmosphere was filled with an enigmatic feeling of melancholy with a nostalgic aftertaste.

Somehow it made him think of her and the special pineapple tarts from Everton Park which he had bought for her for CNY. She seemed appreciative of his efforts but he wondered if he had left her a favourable impression.

Like the silver lining in every cloud, the penetrating rays of the morning sun soon obliterated the gloomy shadows, heralding the arrival of a brighter tomorrow filled with hope and optimism.

CNY 2010 at Chinatown

At this time of the year without fail, he would come here to witness the spectacular rejuvenation of Chinatown as its bustling streets would be painted with an auspicious sea of red, symbolic of the prosperous spirit of Chinese New Year.

Walking through the congested lanes juxtaposed with makeshift stalls selling a variety of traditional CNY goodies, he felt privileged to be immersed in the breathtaking atmosphere of this festive season.

The mixed fragrance of bak kwa (barbecued sliced pork), groundnuts and guo dong (Taiwanese fruit jelly) permeated the evening air with a spontaneous feeling of hope and contentment, subtly celebrating the accomplishments of the previous years while concomitantly beckoning the promising year that lies ahead.

Through his pictures, he hoped to share the magnificent kaleidoscope of colours along Chinatown as well as the euphoric expressions on the faces of people when they celebrate CNY.

Wishing you and your family a Happy and Abundant CNY, he believed that you would similarly rejoice in this sensational experience.

Often forgotten and if ever remembered, usually for the wrong reasons, the back alley is a notorious place frequently associated with garbage disposal, unpleasant odors and rodent infestation.

One afternoon when he unintentionally walked into an inconspicuous back alley at Boat Quay, he was fascinated by its unforeseen beauty and this inspired him to search for similar alleys in order to capture their intrinsic aesthetics onto photographs.

On a radiant Sunday morning, he embarked on an enlightening journey by foot in an endeavor to explore all the back alleys from Whampoa to Chinatown.

Within the claustrophobic alleys, he was intrigued by the astounding symmetry of the statuesque walls on either side of the narrow passageway, converging to a glimpse of the scenery at the far end.

Be it the HDB flats at Whampoa, the mosque at Kampong Glam, the shophouses at Haji Lane, the heritage buildings at Duxton Hill or the river at Boat Quay, this precious scenery never failed to delight him, like the pot of gold at the end of every rainbow.

With the application of HDR (high dynamic range) processing to accentuate the resplendent colors, he hoped that his pictures will alter your perspective, as well as, generate an appreciation of the back alleys around you.

Christmas At Orchard

The diminishing puddle of rainwater cast unexpected but beautiful reflections of the alluring Christmas lights at Orchard Road, adding a new dimension to his otherwise ordinary pictures. Other than the ground, the earlier downpour did little to dampen the joyous mood of the crowd on Christmas Day.

As he progressed further in photography, he found it increasingly difficult to be satisfied with the pictures he took. Tonight was no different. He ended up deleting the majority of his photos because he felt that they looked rather mediocre. With digital cameras becoming so readily available and affordable, everyone seems to be taking lots of photos at Orchard Road and posting them on the Internet but only few are truly praiseworthy.

While he aspired to move towards perfection, he sometimes wondered if the casual photographer who takes photos solely for the fun of it can take better photos than him. After all, being too fixated on the outcome may cause one to lose the enjoyment of performing the task, which he hoped will never happen to him.

As he walked into a night of resplendent lights, magnificent trees and melodious carols, he reminded himself that Christmas is celebrated to commemorate the birth of our Saviour, without whom we would be forever lost in this world.

To end it off, he would like to share with you the song, Christmas Miracle by Shin Seung Hun. Although he does not understand Korean, he can certainly feel that the euphoric spirit of Christmas in the euphanious melody.

A Night At Haji Lane

With the descent of night, he almost could not believe his eyes as he watched Haji Lane metamorphose from a lackluster street into a magical back alley from the pages of some colourful comic book.

When he was younger, he liked to read comics too. Like every other kid, he once dreamed of becoming a super-hero and saving the world one day. Today, long after he has passed the age when he learned to distinguish fact from fiction, he realised that super-heroes did not exist, not because they are man-made but because they are redundant in the world we live in. Although disasters and catastrophes do happen, their frequency of occurrence is not statistically significant to justify the need for a super-hero, who even if omnipotent, may not be omnipresent.

Rather than wait a lifetime for that defining moment which may never arrive, he decided to live every minute of his life to the fullest. Like the old man in some starfish story who would painstakingly pick and throw every starfish on the shore back to the sea, he aspired to touch the hearts of the people he meet and to make a difference to their lives. Believe it or not, it is these little acts of compassion that make life meaningful at the end of the day.

Walking down Haji Lane, these philosophical thoughts flooded his mind on that remarkable night. When you look at his pictures, he hoped that you will similarly be inspired to find the purpose of your life.

Before The Rain Comes

Oblivious of the impending storm, he had to learn the hard way that it is important to read the weather forecast before planning a photography trip. When he emerged from the One Fullerton underpass and saw the ominous dark clouds from a distance, he immediately realized his mistake.

Faced with the predicament of getting caught in the downpour or abandoning the trip altogether, he decided to fully utilize the remaining minutes to take some pictures before raindrops hit the ground.

Looking at the familiar surroundings which he had visited on numerous occasions, both with and without his camera, he decided to try something new this time.

Using the monochrome tone and a bit of tilt-shift magic, he wanted to highlight the distinction between the enormous dark clouds in the sky and the silhouettes of the tall buildings in the foreground while simultaneously creating differential degrees of focus on the neighboring structures.

As he watched the overwhelming cumulonimbus clouds engulf the remaining bits of clear sky, proclaiming the arrival of the apocalyptic thunderstorm, he knew that it is time to find a shelter before rainwaters drench the impoverished earth.
